Your body resembles a finely sculpted Greek masterpiece. Years of sweat and impenetrable self-discipline, exercise and dieting has carved your most outstanding appearance to date. You're lifting weights you never imagined were possible. You can run miles without breaking and you shatter your cardiovascular achievements with each run. Your sex drive is higher than your teenage years when puberty struck. Everything on the surface seems impeccable. The figure staring back at you in the mirror is strong, fit, healthy and attractive. Nothing in this world can stop you.
When we feel the most invulnerable, however, we can often feel the most insecure. Shadows of doubt creeps in. You look beyond the shallow and hollow appearance, wondering "Is it possible the shiniest, most polished car can have the rustiest engine under the hood?"
You're reminded of an article you read years ago, stating the potential harm of using plastic containers for food storage. You paid the article little to no attention, as there were no substantial evidence and research to support the author's claims. But now, the insecurity, self-doubt and drive for excellence makes you question "What if plastic containers are harmful? What if I'm not realizing my full health and fitness potential because I prioritised a few extra dollars of savings and chose plastic over glass?"
You decide to do some research, and you're devastated by what you find. Since the first time you saw that article, more research and information has surfaced regarding the optimal ways to store meals. You make a pros vs cons list to make the logical and calculated next steps. The list looks like this:
Pros of using plastic:
- Easy to carry
Cons of using plastic:
- Contains harmful chemicals such as BPA (even BPA-free marked products) which is related to reduced sperm count, higher risk of breast cancer and increased estrogen
- Heating plastic containers increases chemicals released into food
- Terrible for the environment - plastic recycling process emits greenhouse gases
- Containers deteriorate over time and leaves nasty odours
Pros using glass:
- Safe to reheat food as no chemicals/toxins are released
- Keeps food fresh longer than plastic storage
- Reusable - no odours
- Environmentally friendly - efficient recycling process
- Multiuse - oven safe feature allows food to be cooked and served in the same container
Cons of using glass:
- More costly
- Heavier than plastic
You examine your list of pros and cons. You'd like to have kids one day, so you tremble at the possibility of a reduced sperm count. Estrogen is conducive to muscle building, the primary reason you started hitting the gym. Although you're no environmental advocate and spokesperson, you're conscious of the importance of being environmentally friendly, and would like to leave the world in a better place for your future children. You consider the extra costs of buying glass containers, but quickly figure out the affordability in the long run works out in glass's favour. Considering a typical glass container weighs less than a 1kg dumbbell, which could serve as a warm up to your actual warm up, the added weight of a glass container becomes irrelevant.
Although more research is needed to conclusively say "Plastic containers are bad for you", you decide it's always better to be safe than sorry. The only question that remains is "Is it too late to change?". Then you remember the ageless quote which is plastered all over the walls of your local gym, "It's never too late to change your life".
